Gold and silver are only part of the story. Campaigns run on lumber, favors, faction tokens, dragon scales; even bottlecaps, depending on the world you're building. That's why we're excited to introduce Resources, a flexible new addition to Chronica's currency system that lets you track the things needed for your world building beyond just coins.
More than coins
Chronica has always supported currency, though the original denominations converted automatically along a ratio, like the classic copper, silver, and gold. They're perfect for everyday buying and selling, and they're not going anywhere.
The new Resources solve a different problem, as they don't auto-convert. Each one is tracked as its own distinct quantity, which makes them ideal for anything you'd rather count separately: raw materials, reputation, special event currencies, or coins you want to keep as exact piles rather than rolling up into a single number. If 10 silver shouldn't quietly become 1 gold, a Resource is what you want.
Built to fit your world
Resources are designed to bend around the way your campaign works.
- Categories decide where each Resource lives. Assign it to Players so it sits in player and party wealth, to Kinships so caches and vaults can hold and price it, or add Shops so merchants can sell items priced in it. A single Resource can belong to several at once; something players gather and a cache sells, like gemstones, works in both.
- Groups keep related Resources tidy. Bundle a set of coins or materials together, and the group manages their shared categories for you.
- Secret Resources stay visible to game masters only — handy for behind-the-scenes economies your players haven't discovered yet.
- Active or Inactive lets you switch a Resource on only when it matters, like a currency that's spendable during a single festival or event.
A few ideas to get you started
Once you start thinking beyond coins, the possibilities open up quickly: lumber, ore, gems, loyalty, favors, gold from distant kingdoms or galaxies far away, dragon scales, or those ever-useful bottlecaps. If your players can earn it, spend it, or hoard it, you can track it. Create a shop of "Craft Blueprint" items and price them using downtime, then let your players "purchase" the item to craft their +1 sword, automatically tracking their downtime without extra forms and spreadsheets. Create a City Planning shop with buildings available for lumber and stone that kinships can purchase to expand and build using their stored resource materials. Lots of possibilities!
Try it out
You'll find Resources waiting under Currencies Admin, right alongside Denominations. Use one system, the other, or both together, whatever fits your table best. Every Resource you create flows straight into the holder pages you already use, so player wealth, kinship caches, and shop tills all stay in sync automatically.
We can't wait to see the economies you build. Happy adventuring! :) As always, for the most up to date information, we'd love you to join our Discord! It's a quiet space just for feedback and friendly Chronica and tabletop-focused chat.
